The eruption of 79 CE buried two cities in a single afternoon, but Vesuvius has erupted more than fifty times since — most recently in March 1944, when lava streams reached the towns of San Sebastiano and Massa di Somma.
The volcano remains the only active peak on the European mainland, monitored by the Osservatorio Vesuviano, the world's oldest volcanological observatory, founded in 1841. Its summit crater, the Gran Cono, measures 230 metres deep and 600 metres across, ringed by a footpath that offers unobstructed views across the Bay of Naples and the Sorrentine Peninsula.
Today the mountain sits inside Parco Nazionale del Vesuvio, a 135-square-kilometre reserve established in 1995 to protect both the volcanic geology and the Mediterranean scrubland that cloaks its lower slopes. The park's trail network includes nine designated routes, but the Sentiero del Gran Cono — the path to the crater rim — is the only route that reaches the summit. The final 900-metre ascent begins at the park entrance at 1,000 metres elevation and climbs through switchbacks carved into loose pumice and volcanic scoria. The gradient is steep, the surface unstable, and the wind at the top strong enough to warrant a handrail along the most exposed sections of the rim path.
Visiting Vesuvius from Pompeii offers a rare case of geographic and narrative continuity: the ruins below and the mountain above are separated by fewer than ten kilometres, and the ash layer that preserved Pompeii's streets and frescoes originated from this crater. Most guided itineraries pair the two sites within a single day, with transport provided by coach or minivan. Departure points include Naples, Sorrento, and occasionally the Pompeii excavation car parks themselves. The drive from Pompeii to the Vesuvius park entrance takes 25 to 35 minutes depending on traffic along the SS18 coast road and the winding ascent of the Strada Provinciale Vesuviana. Archaeological escorts often accompany these excursions, contextualising the stratigraphic evidence visible in both the crater walls and the excavated layers at Pompeii.
The summit is exposed year-round to wind and sun, with no shade along the crater path. Summer temperatures at the rim regularly exceed 30°C, while winter conditions can bring ice to the upper slopes. The park enforces a 10-euro conservation fee per visitor, paid at the entrance gate. Access hours shift seasonally, closing earlier in winter months when daylight shortens. Visitors with limited mobility should note that the trail surface is uneven and the final approach includes gradients above 15 percent.
